Newborn diaper output, what to expect birth to 6 weeks

Newborns and what goes on in their diapers is maybe the least control you have in early parenthood. But diaper action tells you A LOT about intake and growth. Knowing what is normal/expected/on track/not too much/not too little, is comforting.

Here it is!

Newborn to 6 weeks, what you want to see in a diaper to know baby is on track with feedings

Pee:

Birthday- zero

Day 1- 1 wet diaper

Day 2- 2 minimum

Day 3- 3 minimum

Day 4 - 6 weeks- 6 plus

Maybe wet diaper- blue line may or may not turn blue but the internal diaper crystals will feel jelly-like when pinched if wet

Definitely wet diaper- about 3 Tablespoons (can try it out at home with a new diaper!)

Poop:

Birthday - zero

Day 1- 1 minimum

Day 2- 2 minimum

Day 3- 3 minimum

Day 4 - 6 weeks- 3-4 minimum

Maybe poop diaper- small spots in the diaper but not quite a quarter sized, but know poop is coming
Definitely poop diaper- quarter sized or larger

Can't forget about weight gain!

5-7% weight loss normal in first 3-4 days old

They should regain birthweight by 10-14 days

Average weight gain 5-7oz per week for the first 6 weeks

The numbers for pee and poop diapers are the minimum. If you are concerned about the number of diapers or weight gain for your baby, reach out to your pediatrician and IBCLC to talk it through with them.
