Your nurses are on your side

Dear postpartum mama,

In a world where mistrust of the medical community is catching like wildfire, we want you to know that we are on your side.

We know you probably walked into your birthing space with a birth plan, armed with research, and ready to play defense against a hospital system you believe (sometimes rightly so) is against you. We’re so sorry you’ve been made to feel that way.

We want you to know that we, your postpartum nurses, have been taught to care above all else. We are your bedside advocate. We want whatever it is you want for you and your baby.

You won’t find us sneaking your baby formula in the nursery. You won’t find us pressuring you to breastfeed when you simply find no joy in it. We don’t want to keep your IV in any longer than you do. We don’t want to follow hospital protocol at the expense of your autonomy simply for the sake of it.

We want to be there with you while your provider presents you with options so that we can help you sift through the jargon. We want to tell you exactly what medications are available to you. We want to share with you benefits, risks, and side effects. We want to check and double check and triple check each and every one we give you. We want to ask permission to check your belly and pads and explain to you why we’d like to keep a close eye on your bleeding. We want to keep you safe and comfortable and loved.

Postpartum is vulnerable. Postpartum is raw. We know. We’ve been in the bed, too. We just want you to know that you can take off your armor with us. You can let it all go. Lean on us. Especially at 2am when it feels like you’ll never sleep again. Let us know what you want. Let us know what you need. We’ll do everything in our power to provide it to you while keeping you safe. We love you and your baby so, so very much.
