Postpartum Mood Disorder New Diagnosis

“I am experiencing a postpartum mood disorder, what now?”

Our #1 tip is: don’t focus on the diagnosis.

After you speak with a licensed health professional to diagnose and treat a postpartum mood disorder (who know you and your health history) let go of that specific diagnosis.

Postpartum mood disorders (PPMD) encompass a wide spectrum of disorders, the most common ones being:

  • postpartum depression (PPD)

  • postpartum anxiety (PPA)

  • postpartum post traumatic stress disorder (PPTSD)

  • postpartum rage

A diagnosis of a postpartum mood disorder is a big step and can often feel like a relief, or devastating or both at the same time.

BUT

Having a diagnosis does not change a thing. Your course of treatment options are very similar:
•therapy
•medications if prescribed
•practicing coping mechanisms
•accepting help from resources in your local or immediate community
•getting sleep

The fact that you, a loved one, or a trusted health care provider recognizes the fact that the huge postpartum hormonal shift is affecting your mood means you are already so far down the right path.

If you know 5 or more moms, you know someone who has worked through a postpartum mood disorder, whether they knew it or not.

The only way for us to work through postpartum mood disorders is to TALK about them.

to your provider
to your partner (but not only your partner)
to your friends
to ones you love and trust

TALK as a means to heal yourself and to help others heal.
