A recent study found “women across all maternal groups described how the postpartum period brought about significant physical and emotional changes and challenges, yet, most women did not feel prepared for these physical and emotional symptoms.
Even for those postpartum symptoms that women were more aware of, they felt ill-equipped to manage these symptoms because they did not have a clear picture of how the symptoms would appear and develop over time, how long they should and could last, and the level of impact that they would have on their daily lives.” [NLM]
“More than 50% of maternal deaths in the United States occur during the first year following childbirth. Nearly 40% of these deaths occur between days 1 and 41 of the postpartum period. Historically, women receive less attention from healthcare providers during the postpartum period when compared with the care provided during pregnancy and childbirth. Women may not return for scheduled follow-up care until 4 to 6 weeks after birth, if they return at all.” [JPNN]
